Learning French develops students’ ability to understand and use a modern language which is widely used internationally, and is one of the official languages of many world organisations and international events.

AIMS of the VCE course

The French course at VCE enables students to:

• use French to communicate with others;

• understand and appreciate the cultural contexts in which French is used;

• understand their own culture(s) through the study of cultures where French is used;

• understand language as a system;

• make connections between French and English, and other languages where possible;

• apply French to work, further study, training or leisure.

VCE French course consists of four units designed by the teacher. Each unit involves at least 50 hours of scheduled classroom instruction. Normally units 1 and 2 would be completed in year 11 and Units 3 and 4 completed in year 12. The study score is reported on a scale of 0–50. It is a measure of how well the student performed in relation to all others who took the study.

Percentage contributions to the study score in French are as follows:

• Unit 3 school-assessed coursework: 25 per cent

• Unit 4 school-assessed coursework: 25 per cent

• Examinations*: oral component 12.5 per cent written component 37.5 per cent.

French at VCE is taught through three prescribed themes.

• The individual

• The French-speaking communities

• The changing world

Under each theme there are three Topics.

The individual [Personal world, Education and aspirations, Personal opinions and values]

The French-speaking communities [Lifestyles, Historical perspectives, Arts and entertainment]

The changing world [Social issues, The world of work, Scientific and technological issues]

Under each Topic there may be several sub-topics.

Theme: The individual

Topic: Personal world

Sub Topics: Personal details and qualities, relationships with family and friends, daily life, free time and leisure activities. [Any other area dealing with the personal life]

 Methods the teachers should use:

Any communicative teaching method or combination of methods which allows students to achieve the outcomes of the course is appropriate. Since the aims and outcomes emphasise communication, teaching methods should ensure that students are provided with a high level of appropriate input in the language, and are involved in activities which encourage purposeful language use.

Teachers should note, however, that the listing of vocabulary, grammatical structures, and other elements of language indicates that a focus on these is also a necessary part of students’ preparation.

Teaching Grammar-Translation method used in 1840 may not really help the students. The teacher should introduce grammar in context rather than beginning the lesson with grammar exercises which may have no connection with the skills they are trying to master.  The teacher should use French to communicate most of the time in the class room as this may be the only time available to the learners to practice French. The teacher should not encourage the students to rote learn material which will not satisfy the communicative nature of the course. The students should be proactively engaged in class asking questions rather than just accepting what the teacher says.

Internal assessment

In unit 3 and 4 the teacher will assess the ability of students by giving school assessed coursework [SAC].  However, the marks given by the teacher are moderated by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA). Parents could read this brochure in order to understand the statistical moderation process.

We think the General Achievement Test (GAT) has some influence on the statistical moderation of the marks provided by the teacher.

French beginners course commenced 8 May 2013 at the Mount Street  Neighbourhood House for the students in year 7. This Neighbourhood house is situated in Glen Waverley area. 300 m through Hinkler road (opposite Chemist Warehouse) from Springvale Rd.

The second term of this continuing French language course, tailor-made to the students in Year 8 and  9 at Mount Street Neighbourhood House is in session. The students who are following this course on every Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 6.30 p.m., are using the course book and the work book entitled “Adosphère 1”. This is an academic French course and those who follow would be advantaged in French language at VCE or International baccalaureate. The communicative, task based teaching approach will be the key feature of this course using target language [French] most of the time in class. The use of making inferences will be enhanced and the critical thinking capacity of the students will develop enabling them to be effective learners in the 21 st Century.
